Charter-  BEST VALUE MOST EXPENSIVE:  Charter is a good company but I must warn you about several things.  They can get pricey and they try to throw in all kinds of bundled packages you may or may not need.  They provide good service, depending on the talent of the person hooking it up.  My service was not installed correctly originally but they were good about sending a technician out to my place and fixing it.  Once Charter fixed the problem it worked excellent.  I am using ATT now and for about ten dollars more than Charter's basic rates, I have faster intranet.  While ATT does not have as good a router, compared to NetGear's by Charter, it still works great while hardwired.  I had some issues with ATT when I did my first install and went wireless.
Charter is the most expensive and if you can get them to sell you intranet without buying a package it is the best service there is.  In life, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!  Charter has excellent phone service so there is no need for ATT anymore.  You can chose one or both but let me tell you, you will pay more for Charter but it is so worth it!!!  Charter just came up with a new 1 Meg speed service for around $23 which though the speed is comparable to Clearwire the price is at least $10 cheaper.  With this option and the fact Charter does phone service too as well as TV there are not too many reasons to chose another company.  I know for me I will be setting up all of my new clients with this service.
One additional service Charter has is their own anti-virus / anti-spyware program.  This program is unlike any other service where they use McAfee but rather their own.  I have tried this anti-virus protection and while it was aggressive enough to remove hard to find viruses and spyware, it is very difficult to work with.  Their tech support could not figure out how to make it work.  We did manage to get it working, and it cleaned the computer well, but it is a Band-Aid until we get a better working anti-virus program on her computer.

AOL-  This service is slooooooooooooooooooooooww as well as NetZero.  It seemed to outperform NetZero in that it actually worked.  NetZero keep trying to redial and reconnect when it wasn't supposed to.

NetZero-  If you are poor as ever this is just the ticket but don't fool yourself, it is slooooooowwwww.  Though I experienced problems with NetZero you can get free service by purchasing Cosmi programs as each new program comes with a free month service.  I understand that some people have continually purchased Cosmi software and had free service everytime they purchased a new Cosmi software program.

ATT-  Disadvantages of ATT.  With ATT you will have to work all the bugs out yourself when you experience them.  Note the wording when.  You darn near have to be a computer technician to fix some of their problems.  ATT has awful phone support so be prepared to spend hours on the phone.  I am leaving this site with high marks for now until I decide the way they treat me on my billing problems I experienced.  If they do me dirty the wording here will reflect the changes.
October 6th 2009, I managed to get a Windows ME hooked up to DSL despite the fact that the computer stated that it was not possible.  This computer now works well and the speed is adequate.  It took several tries until we finally managed to get a technician that was able to help us.  I spent about 45 minutes going through the computer with him after making four previous phone calls.  ATT does not have real good support service however it costs a lot less to hook up intranet than through Charter.  Though Charter costs more, if you are not a technician you will have a better chance at success through them.  Right now I am still having trouble with my intranet service and have had to reset the modem several times.  I have not called tech support because the problem takes too long to solve and I do not have hours of time extra on my hands.
I have had so much trouble with AT&T.  I will never ever ever ever ever use AT&T ever ever ever again!!!  Their tech support is nonexistent, they are extremely rude, you will talk for hours with them and get bumped around for hours not getting anywhere.  Half of the time the cut you off on the phone.  The modem I am used only worked half the time.   AT&T did finally fix their service but I had already switched to Clearwire.  AT&T's service is some of the most rude service ever!!!
I told AT&T about this site and no one even cares.  They figure they can mess people around all day long and still make money.  My service messed up and they never even responded to my complaints.  NetZero did all they could to keep my business and they were great after I told them I was leaving.  If I could go with Charter I could but we don't have Charter service here.  BOTTOM LINE IS AT&T IS NO MATCH COMPARED TO CHARTER, CUSTOMER SERVICE IS THE WORST, AND THEY DON'T EVEN CARE THAT WORDS DO HURT BUSINESSES.

Clear Wire-  Clear Wire actually sells a modem and you receive the intranet from a tower so it is essentially wireless.  When the weather varies so does their performance and signal.  The price is higher but if you are traveling this might be just the ticket.  I often wondered how the performance would be if I used a 12 volt to 110 volt inverter and jumped the voltage up so I could use it in a vehicle.  I think it would work in a moving vehicle however you will need to be where there is service.  The modem supplied only receives a signal depending on how it is turned.  While this modem could be just the ticket for travel the modem must turn toward the signal so for travel you may be turning it a lot.  Note they do make a portable version specifically for laptops that is an omnidirectional antenna.  Clearwire automatically configures itself and worked with all opperating systems ever I tried flawlessly and without struggle. Just plug and play!

Phones as servers-  I currently use Metro PCS and they do not have a service that allows their phones to work as servers.  Blackberries do but you will need to pay additional service and you will need new hardware.  Before purchasing a cell phone you might want to check the capabilities for using it as a server.  Note this will drain your phone batteries quick plus still have limited bandwidth!

Verizon-  I have heard good things about Verizon.  While the bandwidth is limited the service is excellent in all areas.  This would out perform Clearwire if used for portability however Clearwire has unlimited bandwidth but only works in metro areas in the USA.

Information on satellite systems will come in the future.  Right now I do not know much about those systems but when I find out I will post more information!

Advantages of ATT

While I cursed ATT biterly in the private of my own home, and on the intranet they do provide a good service for the price.  Unfortunately I will have to go back to them eventually crying like a dog to get them back since I can't have Charter services where I live.  I think the case where ATT ripped me off was isolated, but I do expect it to get resolved soon.
I did enjoy their router as it worked well and I liked that I could pay for it up front instead of never owning it as Charter's equipment was.  I will keep you posted on how things worked out.  I purchased the router with four ethernet ports and wireless.
Advantages of Clearwire

While so many others search for portability Clear Wire is perfect. That is about the only reason I have kept them this long is I know one day I will have a vehicle and use it on the go so therefore I put up with the slow speed. Clear wire is perfect for anyone who owns an in-home computer repair shop.  Many people hate it but the modem I use gives you unlimited bandwidth where the laptop version limits itself.  It all depends on what your needs are, but thank GOD we have choices...
Verizon Deals

Right now if your needs are with portability Verizon has a mini-laptop you can get.  While you will have to pay sales tax on the computer it comes with intranet service.  While rates vary this is a viable option for some that only need a small computer at a low price.
While initially this sounded like a great dead, Verizon added several more charges into the package making it not worthwhile.
